QUEEN CREEK, Arizona, — The United States incarcerates more citizens than any other industrialized nation in the world. The U.S. has just 5% of the world's population, but holds 25% of the entire world's prisoners. What happens when those people are set free and need to find food, clothing, homes, jobs and self-respect? How do we expect our crime and recidivism rates to drop if we leave this population of Americans out to dry without offering some form of help?
The only way to lower the criminal recidivism rate in the United States is by offering help for those who have made mistakes in the past. Getting Out: success after incarceration is dedicated to providing a general direction for those moving from incarceration back into normal society. It is written from the perspective of a convicted felon in order to help others get back on their feet by finding decent jobs, safe places to live, stronger relationships and forming supports so they will not reoffend.
This book is meant for any family, friends or person with a criminal conviction looking to renter society after prison or jail incarceration. Getting Out explores the steps to organizing the life of a convicted criminal and how to approach many of the hurdles that get in the way of simple happiness and security like finding work, a place to live and rebuilding relationships.
